Acadians
The Acadians are the descendants of French colonists who settled Acadia, in what are now the Maritime provinces of Canada, from the 17th century. After Britain took the region in 1713, most tried to remain neutral, but from 1755 to 1764 the British deported more than 10,000 of them in the Great Upheaval. Many later returned to the Maritimes, while others settled in Louisiana, where they became the Cajuns.
