Áed mac Boanta

d. 839 · 9th century · Also known as Áed son of Boanta

Áed mac Boanta was a king of Dál Riata in the early ninth century, probably ruling under the dominance of the Pictish kings of Fortriu. In 839 he was killed together with the Pictish king Eóganán son of Óengus and many others in a great Viking victory over the men of Fortriu, recorded in the Annals of Ulster, a disaster that opened the way for Cináed mac Ailpín.
