Ammianus Marcellinus

c. 330–c. 400 · 4th century

Ammianus Marcellinus was a Greek-born Roman soldier and historian. His Latin history, of which the books covering 353 to 378 survive, is the main source for the reigns of Constantius II, Julian and Valens. It describes peoples on and beyond the empire's frontiers, including the Picts, Alans, Huns, Goths, Chionites and the Austuriani raiders of Africa, and ends with the Roman defeat at Adrianople.
