Ælfthryth, Countess of Flanders

c. 877–929 · 10th century · Also known as Elftrude

Ælfthryth was a daughter of Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, and the wife of Baldwin II, Count of Flanders, whom she married in the 890s. The marriage linked the young Flemish principality to the West Saxon royal house, and through her son Arnulf I she was an ancestor of the later counts of Flanders and of Matilda of Flanders, wife of William the Conqueror.
