Ælfgifu of Northampton

c. 990–after 1036 · 11th century

Ælfgifu of Northampton (c. 990–after 1036) was the first wife of Cnut the Great and mother of Harold Harefoot, king of England. Around 1030 Cnut sent her with their son Svein to rule Norway, but their regime became hated for its heavy taxes and new laws, while the cult of Saint Olaf grew. They were driven out in 1035, and Magnus the Good became king.
