Ælfgar, Earl of Mercia

d. c. 1062 · 11th century · Also known as Ælfgar of Mercia

Ælfgar was an Anglo-Saxon nobleman, son of Earl Leofric and Lady Godiva, who became Earl of East Anglia and later Earl of Mercia. Outlawed in 1055, he allied with the Welsh king Gruffudd ap Llywelyn, who married his daughter, and together they sacked Hereford. He was restored to his earldom, outlawed again in 1058 and again returned with Welsh and Norse help, and died around 1062.
