Gruffydd ap Llywelyn

c. 1010–1063 · 11th century · Also known as Gruffudd ap Llywelyn

Gruffydd ap Llywelyn was king of Gwynedd and Powys from 1039 and, from about 1055, ruler of nearly all of Wales, the only king ever to unite it. He defeated English and Welsh rivals, raided across the border with Mercian allies and took lands east of Offa's Dyke. Harold Godwinson's campaign of 1063 broke his power, and he was killed by his own men.
