Owain Gwynedd

c. 1100–1170 · 12th century · Also known as Owain ap Gruffudd

Owain Gwynedd, son of Gruffudd ap Cynan, ruled Gwynedd from 1137 and made it the leading Welsh power. He pushed its frontier east towards the Dee, submitted to Henry II after the campaign of 1157, and in 1165 led a Welsh alliance against Henry's great invasion, which failed in the Berwyn mountains. He was among the first Welsh rulers styled prince of the Welsh.
