Earl of Mercia

11th century · 11th century

The Earl of Mercia was one of the great territorial earls of late Anglo-Saxon England, governing much of the old Mercian kingdom under the kings of England. Under Cnut and Edward the Confessor the earldom was held by Leofric and then by his son Ælfgar and grandson Edwin. Edwin submitted to William the Conqueror after 1066 but rebelled and was killed in 1071, after which the earldom lapsed.
