Earl of Kildare

Earl of Kildare is a title in the peerage of Ireland created in 1316 for John FitzGerald and held by the Geraldine (FitzGerald) family. In the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries the earls, above all Gerald FitzGerald, 'the Great Earl', governed Ireland as lord deputies for the crown and dominated Irish politics. Their power was broken after the rebellion of Silken Thomas in 1534–1535; the title is now held by the dukes of Leinster.
