ʻAhoʻeitu

r. c. 950 · 10th century · Also known as Aho'eitu

ʻAhoʻeitu is the first Tuʻi Tonga, the sacred king of Tonga, in Tongan tradition, usually placed around the 10th century. The story makes him the son of the sky god Tangaloa ʻEitumatupuʻa and a mortal woman, Ilaheva Vaʻepopua. Visiting his father in the sky, he was killed by jealous half-brothers and brought back to life, and was then sent down to rule Tonga, founding the line of Tuʻi Tonga that lasted until 1865.
