Al-Ahsa Oasis
Al-Ahsa is a large oasis in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, about 60 kilometres inland from the Persian Gulf, and one of the largest date-palm oases in the world. Its towns, chief among them Hofuf, were held by the Ottomans from the mid-16th century, by the Banu Khalid from 1670 and by the first Saudi state from the 1790s; the Ottomans returned in 1871 until Ibn Saud took it in 1913. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
