Emirate of Nejd and Hasa

1902 CE – 1921 CE · capital Riyadh

The third Saudi state in its first phase, begun when Ibn Saud recaptured Riyadh in 1902, which defeated the Rashidis and took al-Hasa.

Origins

In January 1902 the young Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud, living in exile in the Sheikhdom of Kuwait, captured Riyadh's Masmak fort from the Rashidi governor with a small band of followers. He gradually reclaimed southern Najd from the Emirate of Jabal Shammar, defeating its emir at Rawdat Muhanna in 1906.

Rule and society

Ibn Saud combined tribal diplomacy, marriage alliances and the Wahhabi religious establishment. From about 1912 he settled Bedouin in agricultural communities called hijras, creating the Ikhwan, a militant religious force. In 1913 he took al-Hasa from the Ottoman Empire, gaining the Gulf coast. The Treaty of Darin in 1915 made him a British protégé with a subsidy.

Decline and legacy

In 1921 Ibn Saud conquered Ha'il, ending the Rashidi state, and took the title Sultan of Nejd and its Dependencies, beginning the Sultanate of Nejd.
