Akademgorodok is a scientific town near Novosibirsk in Siberia, founded in 1957 as the centre of the new Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Built in forest beside the Ob reservoir, it housed dozens of research institutes and Novosibirsk State University. It became a symbol of Soviet scientific ambition and of the relatively open intellectual climate of the Khrushchev years.
