Akaba

d. c. 1716 · 18th century · Also known as Houessou Akaba

Akaba was king of Dahomey from about 1685, succeeding Houegbadja. He extended the kingdom's territory on the Abomey plateau through wars with its neighbours. He died around 1716, and after a period in which, according to some traditions, his twin sister Hangbe ruled briefly, the throne passed to his brother Agaja, who carried Dahomey to the coast.
