Houegbadja

r. c. 1645–1685 · 17th century

Houegbadja was king of Dahomey, in present-day Benin, probably from about 1645 to 1685, and is regarded as the true founder of the kingdom. He made Abomey its capital, built the first royal palace there and is credited with laying down many of the kingdom's institutions and customs. His successors expanded Dahomey towards the coast.
