12th century · 12th century

Akhsitan I was Shirvanshah, ruler of Shirvan in present-day Azerbaijan, in the second half of the twelfth century, succeeding his father Manuchihr III. His court at Shamakhi was a centre of Persian poetry, where Khaqani served, and in 1188 Nizami Ganjavi composed Layla and Majnun at his request. He fought invaders from the north with the help of the Georgian kingdom.
