Shamakhi
Shamakhi is a town in the mountains of eastern Azerbaijan, for centuries the capital of the Shirvanshahs and of the province of Shirvan. A centre of the silk trade, it was sacked in 1721 by Lezgin rebels, an event that helped prompt Peter the Great's Persian campaign. Repeated earthquakes damaged it, and after the quake of 1859 the provincial capital moved to Baku.
