Derbent
Derbent is a city in Dagestan, Russia, on a narrow strip of land between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus mountains. The Sasanians fortified the pass in the 6th century with long stone walls running from the sea into the hills, and the Arabs called it Bab al-Abwab, the Gate of Gates. Its citadel and walls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is often called the oldest city in Russia.
