Albemarle Sound
Albemarle Sound is a large estuary on the coast of North Carolina, sheltered from the Atlantic by the Outer Banks. Settlers from Virginia moved to its shores in the 1650s and 1660s, and the Albemarle region became the first settled part of the Province of Carolina and the core of the later Province of North Carolina.
