New Bern

founded 1710 · 18th century

New Bern is a town in eastern North Carolina founded in 1710 by Swiss and German settlers under Christoph von Graffenried at the meeting of the Neuse and Trent rivers. Its encroachment on Tuscarora land helped provoke the Tuscarora War of 1711. It later became the capital of the Province of North Carolina, where Governor William Tryon built his palace.
