New Athos
New Athos (Novy Afon) is a small town on the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia, north-west of Sukhumi. Above it stand the ruins of the medieval fortress of Anacopia. The town takes its name from the New Athos Monastery, founded in 1875 by Russian monks from the Saint Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos. It is also known for a large karst cave system, opened to visitors in 1975.
