Anacopia
Anacopia was a hill fortress above the Black Sea coast at present-day New Athos in Abkhazia. In the early Middle Ages it was the seat of the princes of Abasgia, who ruled as clients of the Byzantine Empire. Its successful defence against an Arab army around 737 raised the standing of its rulers, who later founded the Kingdom of Abkhazia. Ruins of its walls and towers survive.
