Alexius Slav

fl. 1207–1230 · 13th century · Also known as Alexios Slav

Alexius Slav was a Bulgarian noble, a relative of the Asen tsars, who after Tsar Kaloyan's death in 1207 refused to accept Boril and set up his own principality in the Rhodope mountains. Ruling from Melnik with the title of despot, he allied with the Latin Empire and married a daughter of Emperor Henry. His realm was later absorbed by Bulgaria under Ivan Asen II.
