Battle of Klokotnitsa

1230 · 13th century

The Battle of Klokotnitsa was fought on 9 March 1230 near the village of Klokotnitsa in southern Bulgaria. Tsar Ivan Asen II routed the army of Theodore Komnenos Doukas, ruler of Epirus and Thessalonica, who had broken a treaty and invaded Bulgaria, and took him prisoner. The victory ended Epirote power and brought much of Thrace, Macedonia and Albania under Bulgarian rule.
