c. 1180–c. 1253 · 13th century

Theodore Komnenos Doukas (c. 1180–c. 1253) was ruler of Epirus from 1215 who took Thessalonica from the Latins in 1224 and had himself crowned emperor. His Empire of Thessalonica rivalled Nicaea for the recovery of Constantinople until he was defeated and captured by the Bulgarian tsar Ivan Asen II at Klokotnitsa in 1230. He was blinded in captivity but later regained influence through his sons.
