Theodore Roosevelt

1858–1919 · 19th century

Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States, from 1901 to 1909. A hero of the Spanish–American War, he pursued an assertive 'big stick' policy in the Americas, backing Panama's secession from Colombia in 1903 to build the Panama Canal and claiming a right to intervene in Latin America under the Roosevelt Corollary. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905.
