San Francisco

San Francisco is a port city on the Pacific coast of California, founded as a Spanish presidio and mission in 1776. It passed to Mexico and then, in 1848, to the United States, and the California gold rush turned it into the main city of the American West. In the 1850s it was a base for filibusters such as William Walker.
