San Francisco de Campeche
San Francisco de Campeche is a port city on the Gulf of Mexico, capital of the Mexican state of Campeche. Founded by the Spanish in 1540 on the site of a Maya town, it became the main port of the Province of Yucatán and was repeatedly raided by pirates, which led to the building of its walls and bastions in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Its fortified historic town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
