Person
Diego de Landa
Diego de Landa was a Spanish Franciscan friar and later Bishop of Yucatán. In 1562 he led an inquisition against Maya converts suspected of idolatry and burnt Maya codices and images at Maní. His account of Yucatán, the Relación de las cosas de Yucatán, nevertheless became a principal source for Maya history, customs and writing, including the provinces formed after the fall of Mayapan.
