Francisco de Montejo the Younger

c. 1508–1565 · 16th century

Francisco de Montejo the Younger was a Spanish conquistador, son of the adelantado Francisco de Montejo. After his father's failed campaigns he led the decisive conquest of northern Yucatán, founding Campeche in 1540 and Mérida in 1542 on the site of the Maya city of T'ho. Lords such as the Pech submitted, while the eastern provinces were subdued after a great Maya revolt in 1546–1547.
