Caste War of Yucatán

1847–1901 · 19th century

The Caste War of Yucatán was a long uprising of the Maya against the Hispanic and mestizo elites of the Yucatán Peninsula. Beginning at Tepich in 1847, it nearly drove the whites to Mérida and Campeche, forcing Yucatán to rejoin Mexico in 1848. Rebel Maya then held the south-east from Chan Santa Cruz for decades, and many refugees fled to British Honduras.
