Ivan Asen II
Ivan Asen II, son of Ivan Asen I, was tsar of Bulgaria from 1218 to 1241. In 1230 he defeated and captured Theodore Komnenos Doukas, ruler of Epirus and Thessalonica, at Klokotnitsa, after which Bulgaria stretched from the Adriatic to the Black Sea and Thessalonica's new ruler Manuel became his client. He absorbed lands such as Melnik and in 1235 restored the Bulgarian patriarchate with Nicaean agreement.
