Veliko Tarnovo
Veliko Tarnovo is a city in north-central Bulgaria on the Yantra river, built on hills including Tsarevets and Trapezitsa. As Tarnovo it was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the Asen revolt of 1185 until its capture by the Ottomans in 1393, and a centre of Orthodox art and learning. In 1879 the assembly of the new Principality of Bulgaria adopted the Tarnovo Constitution there, and in 1908 Bulgaria's full independence was proclaimed in the city.
