Battle of Maritsa

1371 · 14th century · Also known as Battle of Chernomen, Battle of the Maritsa

The Battle of the Maritsa was fought on 26 September 1371 at Chernomen on the Maritsa river, in modern Greece, where an Ottoman force under Lala Şahin Pasha destroyed the army of the Serbian king Vukašin and the despot Jovan Uglješa, both of whom were killed. The defeat opened Macedonia to the Ottomans, and many Serbian lords, among them the Dejanović brothers, became Ottoman vassals.
