Battle of Marj Ardabil

730 · 8th century · Part of the Arab–Khazar wars

The Battle of Marj Ardabil was fought in December 730 near Ardabil, in north-western Iran, between a Khazar army and the forces of the Umayyad Caliphate. The Khazars destroyed the Arab army and killed its commander, al-Jarrah ibn Abdallah al-Hakami, and then raided deep into the caliphate's lands as far as northern Mesopotamia. The defeat led the Umayyads to send larger armies to the Caucasus in the following years.
