Alfred Dreyfus

1859–1935 · 20th century

Alfred Dreyfus was a French artillery officer from a Jewish Alsatian family. In 1894 he was falsely convicted of passing military secrets to Germany and sent to the penal colony on Devil's Island in French Guiana. The campaign to clear him, the Dreyfus Affair, divided France; he was pardoned in 1899, fully exonerated in 1906 and returned to the army, serving in the First World War.
