Cayenne

Cayenne is the capital of French Guiana, an overseas department of France on the north-east coast of South America. French settlers established a post there in 1643, and after Dutch and English interludes France held it from 1676. It was the administrative centre of the colony and of its notorious penal system from 1852, and remains the territory's main town and port.
