Alien Act 1705

1705 · 18th century · Also known as Alien Act

The Alien Act 1705 was a law of the English Parliament designed to force Scotland into negotiations for union. It threatened that Scots in England would be treated as foreigners and that the main Scottish exports to England would be banned unless Scotland accepted the Hanoverian succession or began talks. Scotland agreed to negotiate, and the threatening clauses were repealed before the Union of 1707.
