Alpes Maritimae

14 BCE–5th century · 5th century BCE · Also known as Maritime Alps province

Alpes Maritimae was a small Roman province in the Maritime Alps between Italy and Gaul, organised under Augustus after the Alpine peoples were subdued, first under a prefect from 14 BCE. Its capital was Cemenelum, now Cimiez in Nice, and in late antiquity Embrun. It guarded the coastal and mountain routes between Italy and southern Gaul, and its name survives in the French department of Alpes-Maritimes.
