Var (river)

The Var is a river of south-eastern France that flows about 114 kilometres from the Maritime Alps to the Mediterranean just west of Nice. In antiquity it formed the boundary between Gaul and Italy, and until 1860 its lower course marked the border between France and the County of Nice, ruled by Savoy. It gave its name to the Var department, through which it no longer flows since the boundary changes of 1860.
