Andries Waterboer
Andries Waterboer was a Griqua leader who became kaptein at Griquatown in 1820. In 1834 he made a treaty with the Cape Colony that brought him a subsidy and arms in return for guarding the frontier. His son Nicolaas Waterboer later claimed the diamond fields, a claim that led to British annexation of Griqualand West in 1871.
