Andromeda Galaxy
The Andromeda Galaxy is the nearest large spiral galaxy to the Milky Way, about 2.5 million light years away, and the most distant object easily visible to the naked eye. The Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi gave one of the earliest recorded descriptions of it, as a 'small cloud', in his Book of Fixed Stars of about 964. Its nature as a separate galaxy was established by Edwin Hubble in the 1920s.
