Anglo-Iraqi War

1941 · 20th century · Part of the Second World War

The Anglo-Iraqi War was a British campaign in May 1941 against the government of Rashid Ali al-Gaylani, which had seized power in Iraq in a pro-Axis coup in April. After Iraqi forces besieged the RAF base at Habbaniya, British and Commonwealth troops relieved it and advanced on Baghdad, restoring the regent Abd al-Ilah. The collapse of authority in Baghdad was followed by the Farhud.
