Angoulême

Angoulême is a city in south-western France on a hill above the Charente, capital of the Charente department. From 866 it was the seat of counts descended from Vulgrin I, later the Taillefer line and the Lusignans, and it passed to the French crown in 1308. Its domed Romanesque cathedral of Saint-Pierre dates from the 12th century, and the city now hosts a major comics festival.
