Ani
Ani is a ruined medieval city on the Turkish-Armenian border, near Kars. Made capital of Bagratid Armenia by Ashot III in 961, it grew into a great trading city known as 'the city of a thousand and one churches'. After Byzantine and Seljuk conquests in the 11th century it was ruled by the Shaddadids and the Zakarids, declined after the Mongol invasions and was abandoned by the 18th century.
