Antônio Gonçalves da Cruz

Also known as Cabugá

Antônio Gonçalves da Cruz, known as Cabugá, was a merchant of Recife and a leader of the Pernambucan revolt of 1817 against Portuguese rule in Brazil. The revolutionary government sent him to the United States to seek recognition and buy arms, the first diplomatic mission of a Brazilian government to that country. He failed to win recognition, and the revolt was crushed while he was abroad.
