Appar

7th century · 7th century · Also known as Tirunavukkarasar

Appar, also called Tirunavukkarasar, was a Tamil Shaiva poet-saint of the seventh century and one of the most revered of the 63 Nayanars. Born a Shaiva, he became a Jain monk before returning to the worship of Shiva, and tradition holds that he converted the Pallava king Mahendravarman I from Jainism. His hymns form three books of the Tevaram, the core scripture of Tamil Shaivism.
