Apuolė
Apuolė is a hillfort in north-western Lithuania, in the historical land of the Curonians. Rimbert's Life of Ansgar records that the Swedish king Olof besieged the fortified town of Apulia there in 854 and forced its defenders to pay tribute, making it the earliest place in Lithuania mentioned in written sources. Excavations have confirmed a large fortified settlement.
