Arabisation

690s · 7th century

Arabisation refers to the policy, begun under the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik in the 690s, of making Arabic the official language of administration. Government registers previously kept in Greek or Persian were converted into Arabic, and a new Islamic coinage was introduced. The reform strengthened central control and the Arab and Islamic character of the Umayyad Caliphate.
